1. Tread Type: The Surface Interface
Tread dictates how much friction the tire generates against the ground. More rubber touching the ground equals more speed on hard surfaces, while larger "teeth" (knobs) are required to bite into soft surfaces.
- Slicks (Smooth): Completely smooth or featuring very shallow grooves. Because pavement is already hard, a slick tire puts the maximum amount of rubber in contact with the road, providing the best grip and the lowest rolling resistance.
- Semi-Slicks (File Tread / Mixed): These feature a nearly smooth or tightly packed "file tread" down the center for fast rolling on straightaways, paired with raised knobs on the outer edges. When you lean the bike into a corner on loose dirt or gravel, those side knobs bite in to prevent washing out.
- Knobby (Aggressive): Covered in tall rubber blocks. These are designed to physically penetrate loose dirt, mud, snow, and gravel to find traction. On pavement, knobby tires are incredibly slow, loud, and actually offer less grip because the tall rubber knobs squirm and fold under pressure.
2. Size (Width): Comfort and Volume
Tire width (typically measured in millimeters for road/gravel and inches for mountain bikes) dictates the volume of air inside the tire. This air volume acts as your bike's primary suspension system.
- Narrow (23mm to 28mm): Used on road racing bikes. Because the air volume is low, they require high air pressure (70–100+ PSI) to prevent rim damage. They are lightweight, highly aerodynamic, and accelerate quickly, but transfer every bump in the road directly to the rider.
- Medium (30mm to 45mm): The sweet spot for gravel bikes, commuters, and modern endurance road bikes. The higher volume allows for much lower tire pressures (35–60 PSI). The tire can deform over rocks and potholes rather than bouncing off them, dramatically improving comfort without sacrificing too much speed.
- Wide (2.0" to 3.0"+): Mountain bike territory. These massive tires are run at very low pressures (15–30 PSI), allowing the tire to act as a shock absorber and mold itself around roots and rocks for maximum off-road traction.
