The Ultimate Winter Cycling Gear Guide

Bike Lights for Winter Safety

Shorter winter days mean more darkness, making lights a necessary accessory for winter cycling. Headlights are essential for illuminating your path, while taillights are crucial for increasing your visibility.

When it comes to bike lights, Ravemen is the industry standard. All of their light sets are USB-C rechargeable and offer a variety of features, including smart braking detection from the taillights and auto-dimming headlights when traffic is approaching.

The LS31 is the most affordable Ravemen set with a moderate 300-lumen headlight and a 30-lumen taillight. The LS32 jumps to a 700-lumen headlight. The LS33 offers an even brighter 1,000-lumen headlight and upgrades to a CL05 taillight — which provides a light-sensor detection system. Finally, there is the LS34 (shown below), the brightest Ravemen light set. The LS34 has a 1,400-Lumen headlight and the 50-Lumen CL06 taillight.

The headlights in the LS33 and LS34 sets each have AI Night Mode, which automatically adjusts brightness based on surrounding light levels.

Brighter winter bike lights are best for darker areas, including trails and more rural areas, and help identify potholes and other obstacles on rugged city roads.

  • Pro Tip: Cold weather can often significantly reduce the lifespan of a winter bike light under a single charge. Ensure the light is fully charged before any winter ride, and carry spare batteries or a backup power source, such as a portable charging block. Certain lights also will not function below a certain temperature, so make sure to read all warning labels and to keep the light in a warm place until you depart for your ride.

Bags & Racks For Winter Riding

One challenge of winter riding is wearing the appropriate number of layers. Having an extra jacket is great until you realize you have nowhere to put it. And don’t forget about dry base layers for the return leg. These items are in addition to the usual beverages, snacks, and tools needed for a longer ride.

With so much winter cycling gear and accessories, having a spacious, waterproof, and durable bike bag is paramount.

The Topeak Tourguide is an excellent choice for a handlebar bag. With a 7.7L capacity, the Tourguide offers ample pockets and includes a rain cover. Both sizes also have a shoulder strap, making it easy to carry when your ride ends.

For a less conspicuous option, consider a frame bag. The Topeak Midloader Frame Bag attaches securely to the bike’s down tube. Its durable, lightweight polyethylene and nylon material is water-repellent and stain-resistant. It is available in 3L, 4.5L (shown below), and 6L capacities.

The largest bike bags are trunk bags that attach to a rear rack. The Topeak MTX series offers a range of bags with different features and sizes.

The EXP and DXP are the largest models, with a minimum capacity of 16L, and include optional fold-out panniers. The DX and EX models are slightly smaller at 12.3L and 8L, respectively, but still have the convenient water bottle holder.

The Topeak MTX 2.0 bike bags work best with a Topeak MTX rack. The MTX 2.0 Explorer Rear Rack (shown below) is the standard Topeak model and fits 26-inch, 27.5-inch, and 29-inch wheels. With a 55-pound capacity, the Explorer is ideal for everything from daily commuting to touring.

For riders with disc brakes, the Super Tourist-DX Rack is optimal. The Super Tourist is equipped for disc brakes and is designed for long-distance touring. The integrated sidebar features a lower pannier attachment point, providing more cargo space on the rack top.

Both racks are compatible with the QuickTrack attachment system for any MTX or RX TrunkBag and rear basket.

How to Stay Warm During Winter Cycling

Bar Mitts & Gloves

One of the most exposed parts of the body during cold-weather riding is your hands. Riding with cold hands is uncomfortable and can lead to dangerous frostbite.

Fortunately, there are several ways to protect your hands from the elements.

Bar Mitts (Road Extreme Internal Cable version shown below) are neoprene waterproof covers that fit over handlebars and serve as the first line of defense against cold winter winds and precipitation. They come in various styles to fit all handlebar shapes and sizes, and they include a zipper opening to cool your hands if they overheat.

Another hand-warming option is gloves. The Planet Bike Borealis Winter Gloves offer top-of-the-line cold-weather protection. They include a windproof back and a fleece-lined thumb, and offer ample insulation.

Gloves can be worn alone or with bar mitts for extra insulation on bitterly cold days.

  • Pro Tip: If you are still battling cold hands, try layering blue nitrile gloves under your insulated riding gloves. These medical-style gloves prevent air from entering or exiting, keeping your hands warm in extreme conditions.

Other Ways to Stay Warm on Winter Rides

If you also experience cold feet, Plant Bike offers its Blitzen Shoe Covers (shown below). Insulated and windproof, these fleece-lined covers are compatible with road and mountain bikes.

When it comes to keeping your head warm, a balaclava is the best option. The Pace Sportswear Thermal O2 Balaclava is low-profile and fits snugly under any helmet, defending your face and ears from harsh conditions.

Choosing Winter Bike Tires

Strong traction is key when riding on snowy or icy surfaces. These tricky conditions call for wider tires with a more pronounced tread.

Studded tires are also a trusty option for traversing frozen and icy terrain.

Studded vs. Non-Studded Bike Tires

Studded bike tires help make winter cycling safer. The metal studs help penetrate ice and snow, increasing tire traction in frozen conditions. These tires are ideal for paved paths covered with snow and ice, as well as off-road riding.

For road bikes, the 45NRTH Gravdal tires — available in 700x38 (shown below) and 700x45 — are a strong choice. With 240 concave carbide aluminum studs, the Gravdal delivers excellent traction in even the iciest conditions and adds safety with a reflective sidewall. They are also available in a 650bx38 size.

An optimal studded 26-inch fat bike tire is the Terrene Cake Eater or Cake Eater Light. With 180 TripleTraction Tungsten Crown Studs, these tubeless-ready 26x4.6 fat tires deliver excellent durability for extreme off-road use. The Cake Eater has a 60 TPI, while the Cake Eater Light is a more supple 120 TPI.

When it comes to 29ers, look no further than the 45NRTH Wrathchild Tire. Available in 29x2.6, this tubeless-ready tire features 252 XL concave carbide aluminum studs, making them ideal for all winter conditions.

With winter bike tires, extra studs are always helpful. The Vee Fat Tire Replacement Studs offer 250 carbide replacement studs and include a handy installation tool.

Studded tires are not always necessary. If winters in your area are dry or don’t usually drop below freezing, the heavier weight and increased grip of the studs will slow you down by creating added rolling resistance. Dry pavement will also wear down studs very quickly. In addition, studs are less helpful on groomed snow trails.

In these conditions, regular road or fat tires will suffice.

  • Pro Tip: Keep your tires at a slightly lower pressure if you plan to ride in snowy conditions.  Lower air pressure increases the tire’s give, providing more grip on softer, snowy surfaces.

Winter Bike Cleaning & Maintenance

Another challenge of winter cycling is the increased wear and tear on bikes. Road salt is corrosive, and melted snow and ice can cause rust. Gently wiping off your bike with a rag or towel is strongly recommended after any journey through the elements.

For more heavy-duty cleaning, use the Pedro's Pro Brush Kit alongside the Pedro's Essential Bike Care Kit II to keep your bike in top shape.

The Brush Kit includes four brushes: a large brush for frames and wheels; a gentler toothbrush ideal for cogs, derailleurs, chains, and chainrings; a cone brush for hard-to-reach places; and a parts-cleaning brush for applying degreaser.

The Bike Care Kit (shown below) includes three cleaners to cover all your bike care needs. The biodegradable Pig Juice Degreaser is excellent for removing oil, dirt, and grime from your drivetrain. The Green Fizz Bike Wash is ideal for general bike washing, safely loosening dirt and debris without stripping grease and lube. Finally, the X Dry Chain lube delivers clean, long-lasting performance in dry to mixed conditions while protecting your chain from wear and the elements.

The X Dry Chain lube is best suited for ideal conditions. For winter riding, we recommend the Rock-N-Roll 4 oz Extreme MTB Blue Lube. This petroleum-based lubricant provides excellent protection against dirt and dust for riders pedaling in wet conditions.

Other Winter Riding Essentials

For riders who pedal year-round, we recommend more durable bike components.

The KMC Eco Proteq Chain is available in 8-speed, 9-speed, 10-speed, 11-speed, and 12-speed options and offers enhanced weather protection. These chains receive 650 hours of salt spray testing, and the Eco Proteq technology offers double the rust resistance versus KMC’s regular RustBuster treatment. The Eco Proteq series is perfect for commuters or all-season riders.

Another helpful accessory is a fender. These lightweight plastic shields clip onto the bike frame to block splashback from mud, snow, and water from the riding surface.

The Topeak DeFender FX/RX Fender Set (shown below) is compatible with 27.5-inch and 29-inch bikes with tires up to three inches in diameter. Lightweight and durable, the DeFender’s highly polished underside prevents buildup while protecting the rider during even the dirtiest of rides.

For 700c road and gravel bikes, the SKS X-Tra Dry Rear Quick Release Fender is a strong choice. It is lightweight and features shock-resistant, high-performance plastic. The X-Tra Dry also features a powerstrap for quick-release fastening on all seatposts.
