Mark Cavendish, the British cycling legend from the Isle of Man, has once again etched his name into the annals of cycling history with a stunning victory, claiming his 35th stage win at the Tour de France. The 39 year-old sprinter, known for his sheer speed and tactical acumen, demonstrated why he remains a force to be reckoned with in the world of professional cycling.
The record-setting win occurred during Stage 5 of the 2024 Tour de France, which saw riders tackle a challenging route from Saint-Jean-de-Maurienne to Saint-Vulbas. Despite facing stiff competition from younger sprinters, Cavendish showcased his unparalleled sprinting prowess in the final meters of the stage. With a burst of acceleration, he surged past his rivals, crossing the finish line.
The record was originally tied with Belgium 5 time Tour winner Eddy Merckx. In last years Tour Mark had his sights on the same record setting finish but fell short when he broke his collarbone in a crash early on in the Tour. Mark then declared his retirement after the crash. Several months later he decided that he needed to go for the record.
"Every win at the Tour de France is special," Cavendish remarked in a post-race interview. "To reach 35 stage wins is beyond what I could have imagined. It's a testament to the hard work of my team and the belief they have in me."
